Jan and Mattie

Nebraska Portrait Commission in Pastel 1998, size 22 x 18 inches, created from Nancy's own photos and sketches

An interior scene, a room and its belongings, often tells a story in a portrait. Here Jan has a photo of her father on the desk where she, a teacher, sits reading.
The vase on the floor came with the historical home, a home Jan restored. A framed photograph Jan found in the house showed a young woman in period clothing, standing beside the vase in a time when the house and vase were both new. Jan had the idea to include the vase in her own art, for continuity with the history of the house and with all who have called it home.
